What is your motivation for helping entrepreneurs build companies?

“In 2011 I co-founded a mobile shopping startup called Pickie that was ultimately acquired by RetailMeNot. I’ve experienced the ups & downs, and want to help entrepreneurs on their journey. It’s incredibly rewarding to play a role in helping a company grow from an idea to a business that makes a bigger impact.“

How did you get into tech?

“My dad gets some credit– he was an engineer and encouraged me to be intellectually curious. In 4th grade I built an electric motor. I studied engineering and was a TA for physics in college. I did software internships, then worked as an engineer in General Motors’ advanced engineering group post-college.“

What is your favorite book? Why?

“The Great Gatsby. There are so many layers to the book, and if you put in the work and dig beneath the surface, the story and characters have very different meaning.”

Why do you come to work everyday?

“I love learning, and working in venture, everyday I’m exposed to new industries, technologies, and ideas.“

Sonia Nagar is a Venture Capitalist, angel investor, and board director. Sonia is currently a General Partner at Pritzker Group Venture Capital responsible for sourcing, diligence and oversight of the firm’s investments in marketplaces, consumer products and services, and emerging technology companies. Before joining PGVC Sonia was vice president of product and head of mobile apps for RetailMeNot, responsible for leading an app redesign that earned a People’s Voice Webby Award for Best Shopping App. Sonia joined RetailMeNot in 2014 following its acquisition of Pickie, the venture-backed mobile shopping start-up she co-founded in 2011. Prior to Pickie, Sonia was a senior associate for Booz & Company, and worked in product management, investment banking, and engineering roles with Amazon, Goldman Sachs and General Motors.

Sonia is currently on the board of directors of BACH, School Health, and 1871, and was previously on the board of directors of Wander Beauty, Sittercity (acquired by Bright Horizons), and Curiosity.com (acquired by Discovery, Inc.). Sonia is currently a board observer for ShopThing and was previously a board observer for Backlot Cars (acquired by KAR) and Repurpose. In addition to her work with PGVC Sonia invests for the Community Fund, an early stage fund investing in community-driven companies. Sonia holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Sonia lives in Chicago with her husband, 3 kids and dog.
